Syzygy is the multi-generational, open-ended art collective of Brieke Drost (1957), Mireille Tap (1990) and Veerle Melis (1990) that stands for sisterhood and mutual support. Interwoven with our individual practices, our collective projects commit to creating space for intuitive, gentle power and solidarity. This often means inviting in and offering a platform to other artists who share our values, in exhibitions and performances.

Oval Window, 2024, Vleeshal, Middelburg, NL

With work of Broeder Dieleman, Brieke Drost, Ingrid van de Linde, Janne van Gilst, Mireille Tap, Veerle Melis

Scenographic elements: light-yellow wall paint, curtains and pillows
For Vleeshal’s public program Oemoemenoe, we created the exhibition Oval Window in a so-called praathuisje - loosely translated to English as a conversation house. For this exhibition, we collaborated with the daily users of the praathuisje and three local artists: Broeder Dieleman, Ingrid van de Linde, and Janne van Gilst. Syzygy developed a scenography in which we presented the works of these three artists alongside our own works and photographs that were collected by the daily visitors of the house.

Come Closer, 2024, Indigo+Madder, London, UK

Scenographic elements: white draped fabric ‘room devider’ (photo 2), and satin cushion with tassels displaying the work of Leo Castelloe (photo3). Iceblue entrance curtains and plaster butterfly wall ornaments (photo 4)
An excerpt from the website of Indigo+Madder:

‘...a radical softness could be found in the anti-spectacular, in the spaces in-between, in that which is not staged with specific intentions, a space for emotions, a softening of roles and stable identities, the imperfect, the risking of oneself, the awkward, the stuttering of the voice, all that which does not seek to categorise. Taking one’s time to dwell, to not accept the invitation of drama and conflict, grasping the complexity which rests in the space between people...’ ^

Come Closer is a collaboration between Indigo+Madder and Netherlands-based collective Syzygy.

The exhibition brings together work by ten local and international artists to explore various ideas around the role of ‘softness’ in the creation of spaces of belonging, social connection and vulnerability. The work considers the radical potential of these spaces and seeks to recover an alternate possibility by expanding and enriching our understandings of the ephemeral, the multiplicitous, the subversive and the handmade.

State of Cling, 2022, Omstand, Arnhem, NL

With work of Anna Navas, Hanna Mattes, Janne Schimmel, Mitchel Peters, Niamh Porter, Nora Aurrekoetxea, Sibylle Eimermacher

Scenographic elements: light blue wall skirt (photo 1), white curtains (photo 2), plaster wall and ceiling ornaments, an assembly of cusions on a soft sitting carpet and tea set (photo 4)
For the exhibition State of Cling at Omstand Arnhem we invited artists who - through concepts, materiality, imagery or gesture - connect with what we call a ‘State of Cling’; a moment in which things gather and fall in place; a high-pitched sound, sharp and fragile, or resonance in union. The exhibition took place at Omstand, a space for contemporary art in Arnhem.

Scenographic and participatory elements included the curtains on the previous slide, plaster ornaments and an installation of cushions and glassware. During opening hours, tea was served, and visitors were invited to embroider the cushions.

Moon’s Gambit, 2021, Dit is kunst, Arnhem, NL

With work of Brieke Drost, Sibylle Eimermacher, Mireille Tap

Scenographic elements: metal frames with draped textiles, liver colored floor painting resembling an armour shield
Moon’s Gambit was the first exhibition of Syzygy.
Gambit refers to an opening move in chess, a tactical step forward to take up the battle. This was the attitude with which we introduced ourselves and our values as a collective. The moon in this context stands for nurturing intuitive feminine power.

During this exhibition we exclusively showed works the members of our collective at the time; Brieke Drost, Mireille Tap and former collective member Sibylle Eimermacher
